UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, BEAUFORT, SC.
building takes its cue from an existing two-story residential
structure which shares the same lot and which houses faculty offices.
Although more than twice the size of this structure, the shapes and
proportions of the new facility are designed to resemble those of the
existing building. To create visual unity, the materials, details, and
colors are also similar.
The double entrance responds both to existing and to future anticipated campus circulation. The laboratories, classroom, offices, a roof terrace, and an open stair face the saltwater marsh and invite the building's occupants to enjoy the view.
The two-story hall, lit by large windows above the entrances, focuses on small aquariums which are visible from this hall and from the laboratories. A service core contains stair and toilets.
